One of my favorite ways to explore Northern Michigan is on foot. Whether you're training for a race, looking to keep your workout routine while on vacation, or simply want an excuse to see more scenery, there are some incredible routes near Island View Shores.

If you only do one run during your stay, make it this one at sunrise.
Park near Rusted Spoke Brewing Company and head toward the marina. Loop around the waterfront, take in views of the Mackinac Bridge, and wander through the quiet streets of Mackinaw City before the crowds arrive.
Early mornings are my favorite time to run here. Traffic is light, the air is cool, and the sunrise over the water is absolutely breathtaking.
Continue through downtown, pass the city parks, and enjoy a side of Mackinaw City that many visitors never see. Loop wide and stay along the water to get to the Mackinac Bridge and then wind through the streets to run right through the downtown area.
Need a little more distance? Hop onto the N Western Michigan Trail for an out and back. You'll likely find others on bikes, running, or walking since the KOA is nestled back in there! You'll cross under a overpass bridge just south of he Mackinaw Family Market. (S. Nicolet St and Petoskey to Mackinaw Trail)

The North Country Trail passes right through our area.
Feeling ambitious? Start at Island View Shores and head toward Mackinaw City. The route is approximately seven miles one way to Mackinaw City OR go 7 Miles the other way to Cheboygan and offers a beautiful mix of wooded sections, and peaceful stretches away from traffic.
It is flat and fast! Along the way you'll also see some streams passing through and depending on the year you'll see an abundance of fish coming up stream.
Whether you're running or biking, this is one of the most rewarding routes near the property.
Along the way

Looking for a memorable workout with an incredible reward at the end? Head to Tahquamenon Falls State Park and tackle the scenic River Trail connecting the Lower Falls and Upper Falls.
Start at the Lower Falls and follow the trail approximately 4 miles to the Upper Falls. The route winds alongside the Tahquamenon River through beautiful forests, offering stunning views and plenty of opportunities to stop and take it all in. Whether you choose to hike, trail run, or simply enjoy a leisurely walk, this is one of the most beautiful trails in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Note the trails deep between the two falls are narrow, have roots, and some stairs. Only in a short section would I consider this a technical trail, but would not recommend the full loop for anyone who is not prepared to be in a narrow trail with possible tripping hazards.
Once you reach the Upper Falls, treat yourself to an appetizer, a cold drink, or even lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub before making the return trip back to the Lower Falls.
The full route is approximately 8 miles round trip and is well worth the effort. During the summer months, be sure to bring bug spray, as the mosquitoes can be enthusiastic participants in your adventure! In return, you'll be rewarded with lush forests, river views, and one of Michigan's most iconic destinations.
I've done this trail during the winter as well, and it was absolutely magical. Snow-covered trees, a frozen landscape, and the peaceful quiet of the season made it feel like a completely different experience. At the lower falls you can cross over to the little island, it is a fun easy loop around, I highly recommend!
Whether you're looking to keep up your fitness routine while on vacation or simply want to explore one of Northern Michigan's most beautiful places, this trail is a must-do.
Running here isn't really about pace.
It's about watching the sunrise over Lake Huron, spotting a freighter in the distance, hearing nothing but your footsteps on a forest trail, and discovering places most visitors drive right past.
That's what makes Northern Michigan special.
